When you retire as a police officer or as a firefighter, you lose more than just a job. First responders are like family, they do everything together and work side by side in some of the world’s most demanding environments. When you retire, you lose a lot of opportunities to stay active. Fortunately, there are still plenty of ways to keep fit and healthy when you retire.

Connect with Others

One of the best ways to keep active when you retire as a first responder is to stay connected with others in the same industry who are now in the same situation as you. If you have carefully considered your police or paramedic retirement plan it should include ways to stay active. There are lots of resources out there for retired first responders to help them in all sorts of ways.

It is important to stay socially connected by working with online coaches and joining clubs and activities.

Here are just some ideas to keep you connected to others:

  • Group Walking Classes
  • First Responder Retirement Services
  • Cycling Clubs
  • Dance Groups

Retirement is a great time to visit your friends and relatives but instead of driving, why not walk or ride a bicycle?

Right Environment

When we retire, we have an opportunity to start a new life in a new location. If you plan on staying active during retirement, think about the surroundings you choose. You could go to a retirement community and mix with others who enjoy physical activity, or you decide to go somewhere more rural and take up a hobby like gardening. Your surroundings play an important role in your willingness to engage in a certain activity. For example, if you move to a warmer climate, you have more of a chance to exercise outdoors.

New Purpose

Staying active in retirement is also about finding activities that stimulate our mind as well as our bodies. Volunteering is a wonderful option when you are retired. You can choose to work with veterans or mentor kids. You can also get involved in community projects or local sports teams.

When you retire as a first responder, you don’t have to lead a relaxing lifestyle just because you no longer work on the front line. There are plenty of ways to stay active during retirement and taking part in exercise is just one of them. It is all about looking after your physical and mental health as you age.
